  • Cuban Themed Event Drives Unprecedented Success in Los Angeles
    (December 21, 2007)
  • In January 2007, Southern Californian members of the hedge fund community touched the lives of children in a new city by inaugurating a Hedge Funds Care fundraiser in Los Angeles. The momentum from that first event coupled with a new and daring theme brought out attendees to the second annual event, on November 27, 2007, in unexpectedly high numbers.

Seeking to make the most of the temperate late-fall weather that only Southern California can deliver, the Executive Committee in Los Angeles planned a Cuban-themed night on the roof of The Paley Center for Media (previously The Museum of Television & Radio), in Beverly Hills. The event, entitled “Noche Cubana,” evoked an intimate Caribbean ambiance that was both laid-back and welcoming.

Over 200 guests mingled with their cohorts in the hedge fund industry as well as several celebrities and artists. 10 Cane Rum was generous enough to sponsor the event, complete with a scratch bar. At the opposite side of the roof, a skilled artisan rolled Cuban-style cigars by hand, and everyone boogied down to the rhythms of the talented Salsa ensemble Kimora.

Moreover, the silent auction itself was also innovative, as it featured a predominance of original art pieces among the expected hotel getaways and rare fine wines. The combined sources of auction bidding, raffle tickets, event tickets and sponsorships netted over $60,000 – one third higher than last year’s net. This year’s granting process will take place in the spring of 2008.

  • Los Angeles Wine Tasting Event
    (January 20, 2007)
  • Hedge Funds Care Makes a Difference in Los Angeles

On January 18, 2007, Hedge Funds Care threw its inaugural Los Angeles fundraiser. Almost 150 hedge fund industry principals, attorneys, prime brokers and fund administrators convened at the graciously donated offices of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, LLP, in Century City, for an evening of exquisite cuisine, heated casino-style games, a very successful silent auction and, not least of all, wine degustation provided by Au Bon Climat, Frank Family Vineyards, Grgich Hills and Jordan Family Winery.

Due to the event’s popularity and generous donations to the auction from, among others, Hotel del Coronado, PlumpJack Winery, Calistoga Ranch and the Patina Restaurant Group, the evening of wine and games raised $50,000. This success represents the culmination of months of planning and coordination volunteered by representatives from AIS Fund Administration, Banc of America Securities Prime Brokerage, The BISYS Group, Bloomberg, Deloitte & Touche LLP, Merlin Securities, Morgan Stanley, Rothstein Kass & Co., and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, LLP. The effort was an exemplary synergy of volunteerism and industry collaboration.

The Los Angeles Committee will soon begin its grant process, using the evening’s funds raised to further local organizations’ efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect.
